Psychodynamic therapy is interested in discovering the origins of our feelings, attitudes and behaviours, recognising that we all develop patterns of relating and ways of being in the world early on in life. While these may have worked for us in the past, they may no longer be helpful or appropriate in our present lives, and be causing us conflict and other emotional and practical difficulties. Though largely unconscious, they nevertheless have a huge impact on the way we live our lives, the way we behave and feel, the decisions we make, the sorts of relationships we create.
Self awareness and understanding develops out of the therapeutic relationship and puts us in a position to make choices that lead to change, rather than feeling at the mercy of external forces. Insight can lead to relief from symptoms, healthier relationships, a more authentic way of being that allows us freedom to live more effectively and fully in the present.
